Biography
Survolaj is a Romanian rock band formed in 1985, and is now composed of members:
Daniel Silvian Petre - vocals, flute, harmonica;
Szabo Zsolt - guitar;
Dobreanu Theo - bass guitar;
Levente Molnar - drums;
The band has had a variation of styles, from psychedelic to alternative, progresive to grunge, stoner rock, blues and many others.
Their main influences range from Jimi Hendrix to Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath, Audioslave, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Porcupine Tree, A Perfect Circle, The Doors, King Crimson, Cactus, Mountain, Grand Funk Railroad, Pearl Jam, Frank Zappa, Pink Floyd, Gov't Mule and Cream.
They are considered the pioneers of Romanian psychedelic blues rock. Their style is a mixture of genres like hard rock, progressive rock with free jazz sessions. The rock press usually compares Survolaj to Led Zeppelin and The Doors.
Survolaj sings in Romanian, as well as in English, by the lyrics of Daniel Silvian Petre, the band’s lead singer, who is also a well known Romanian poet.
Survolaj performed in Romanian and European festivals alongside artists like Jack Bruce, Alvin Lee, Ian Gillan, Uriah Heep, Correy Harris, Sugar Blue, Debbie Davies, Larry Coryell, Cradle of Filth, The Dandy Warhols, Klimt 1918, Tatrai Tibor and Magyar Atom.
Their first album, “Survolaj”, was released in 1992 and achieved widespread popularity. It became a must have for the vinyl records collectors. The same year brings Survolaj a shared live album with The Ian Gillan Band.
Survolaj’s second LP, “Let Me Fly in Your Hair”, was released in 1994. After this album the breakup followed.
The year 2007 brought the band’s reunion in their original formula: Daniel Silvian Petre (vocals, harp, flute), Zsolt Szabo (guitars), Catalin Teodoreanu (bass), Levente Molnar (drums) and the release of the re-edited first album “Survolaj”.
In 2009, Survolaj released their third LP intitled "Strazi bantuite de noapte" in the following line-up: Daniel-Silvian Petre - voice, harp, blockflotte, Zsolt Szabo - guitar, electric piano, Levente Molnar - drums, Stefan Czifrak - bass.
The album is selfproduced and was recorded during november 2008 and march 2009, in Timisoara, Romania and was mixed by Levente Molnar.
