Stephen Gardner was born in Belfast in 1958. He did not take an active interest in music until he was in his early twenties. After playing in a band for 2 years, he began to learn classical guitar and theory. He gained entrance to the University of Ulster in 1984, where he took an interest in composition. After postgraduate studies in composition at The University of Wales, Gardner dedicated his time to composing.
