Sidney Corbett, born in 1960 in Chicago, studied music and philosophy at the University of California, San Diego, and Yale University, where he attained a doctorate in 1989, as well from 1985 to 1988 studying at the Hamburg college of music with György Ligeti. Since 1985 Corbett has been predominantly active in Europe.
His works, which cover stage, orchestra, instrument solo and chamber works, received numerous prices and honors at home and abroad and are performed world-wide. A special emphasis of his recent work lies in the range of the concert hall. Examples of this are the chamber opera "X AND Y ", which were debuted with the Eclat festival Stuttgart in February 2002, the stage work "Paradiso", after Dante, for female voice and string quartet, which was also debuted in February 2002 in Basel, the opera NOACH, after a libretto of Christoph Hein, as well, which was not debuted in of Bremen the theatre in the play time 2001/02 the chamber opera SILENCE EXCEPT THAT of the WIND, after texts of Fernando Pessoa (furnished of Simone de Mello), again on behalf of Bremen the theatre, which was debuted in January 2007.
In addition to the works “Yael” belong to the last time for violin and orchestra, which were debuted by the violinist Kolja Lessing and the Concertino Basel in March 2005, the work “exit” for E-guitar and chamber ensemble for the guitarist Seth Josel and the ensemble music factory, which were debuted in the context of a Portraitkonzerts in March 2005 with the Deutschlandfunk Cologne, his 2nd symphony, “the immaculate of sand”, which were debuted in October 2004 by the Niederrheini Sinfonikern under GMD Graham Jackson, as well as the string quartet “Fractured Eden”, a spreading unit of the Düsseldorfer concert hall, for the [artist[Auryn Quartet, which were debuted on 28 May 2006, as well as his 3rd Symphony, Breathing the Water, for Soprano, trumpet, upright bass and string orchestra, an order of the state State of Berlin, which was debuted in November 2006 in Berlin. In March 2006 a Portrait CD with works by Sidney Corbett, from the guitarist Seth Josel and the music factory, on the Cybele label.
Since October 2006 Corbett has been a professor of composition at the university for music and art at Mannheim. Sidney Corbett lives with his wife and two children in Berlin.
