Now attempt to extrapolate what a Kalamazoo, Michigan duo might evoke out of this combination of instruments … then, the harmonies hit and it becomes even harder to imagine.
Their love for bands like Slowdive, Low, Depeche Mode, and Sonic Youth is obvious but they never sounded anything like their predecessors. Their output consisted of a single debut of 11 songs (ShogunLP), an EP of 5 songs (ShogunEP), and a live radio set (widrIQ) which eschewed their previous instrumentation and songs in favor of an hour set of improvisation using samples, guitar loops, and echo-laden electric piano.
A strong sense of songwriting, cryptic lyrics, exciting dynamics, and a willingness to experiment, makes it worth seeking out these rare albums. ShogunIQ create fire from worn time. it's a now sound, made with pieces past.
