Comedy Is Dead is the fifth studio album by Massachusetts comedy rock boyband Rectus Abdominus released on September 21, 2018. Technically a comeback album, the album comes after a long period of dormancy due to inner turmoil after the massive commercial and critical success of their previous effort, MWLMFAFS, which remains one of their most successful to date. The album was recorded mostly in secret starting in July 2018, with not even those close to the band members knowing that they were working on new music. The track "Nothing Lasts Forever" was the first to be written and recorded and was subsequently selected as the album's lead single, which was released on July 28, 2018, along with the announcement that the band had officially returned. Unlike their previous two releases, the recording sessions for Comedy Is Dead were entirely positive and bore no conflict between the five band members. The album's sound is described as more matured and innovative for its time, showing new influences from dance-pop to doom metal, with the band's usual mix of hard rock and pop punk mixed in throughout. The album's production also shows growth from their previous two albums, bearing a very different drum sound which lacks the piercing flanger effect that was present on the drum tracks on The New Religion and MWLMFAFS. After the album's release, Rectus Abdominus embarked on The Eleven Year, Five Month, Three-And-A-Half Week Anniversary Of When I Lost My Original War Wizard Monster Truck At Recess In The Sandpit Of The Swift River Elementary School Playground And Blamed All My Friends For It And Never Saw It Again Tour in the fall of 2018. To cap off the album's promotional cycle, the band released their first Christmas song, "Jingle Smells", on December 25, 2018.
