Something In The Water (Does Not Compute) is the seventh track on Prince's fifth album 1999, and, eleven months after the album's release, it was included as the b-side of the album's fourth single, Automatic, released in Australia only.
On 31 October 2013, a rehearsal recording of Something In The Water (Does Not Compute), recorded on 30 October 2013 at Paisley Park Studios, was made available on the 3rdEyeGirl YouTube account as a static video with artwork by Stella Blu.
On 1 November 2013, the same rehearsal recording was made available on the 3rdEyeTunes.com.
A different early take of the song was released in 2019 as the eleventh track on the Vault Tracks part 1 disc of a Deluxe edition of the 1999 album.
Basic tracking took place at Prince's Kiowa Trail Home Studio in Chanhassen, Minnesota, in mid-April 1982. Prince re-recorded the song on 28 April 1982 (two days after How Come U Don't Call Me Anymore, a day after an original, unused recording of Raspberry Beret and four days before Automatic) at Sunset Sound in Hollywood, California.
