  • TOP 100 ALBUMS OF THE 2000s

    26 May 2011, 03:40 by evilsoybean

I'm taking on the monumental task of ranking 100 of my favorite albums from the decade. We're a year and a half removed from the decade so I think it's a bit easier now to take a look back without getting caught up in the hype of 2009. I've got my entire list in order, but I'm still working on writeups. For now, here's 100-91.

Yes, I know there are huge gaps. I'll fix them later.

    100) Of Montreal - The Sunlandic Twins (2005)
    http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/thumb/b/b8/Sunlandictwins.PNG/220px-Sunlandictwins.PNG
This is the album when the darkness seep through the cracks in Of Montreal's sunny indie pop, and it makes for some enjoyable listening. The first half of this album is catchy and danceable, while the second half is dark and brooding, and while the album doesn't cover the full range of human emotion quite like later albums Hissing Fauna and Skeletal Lamping, it is clearly a step in that direction. It will make you want to move, and maybe later it will make you want to sit and reflect.

Mon 29 Mar – Phoenix, Two Door Cinema Club

    Online here: http://www.godisinthetvzine.co.uk/content/content_detail.php?id=4250&type=Live

I hadn't been to the Roundhouse before, it was round. Shocking. Anyway, what better way than to visit yet another live music venue in London that I hadn't previously been to than with the great combination of Phoenix and Two Door Cinema Club? That's a rhetorical question by the way, it's all subjective, yeah?

So the thing is, Two Door Cinema Club have been getting a bit of flak lately off the back of their début album since musically it's the equivalent of the clip show episode in a TV series that sums up the past five years of musical buzz bands without actually adding anything new. It's a criticism I can't argue with too strongly, but regardless, the songs are still engaging enough that I still really like them. As they began, my first thought was that I could have sworn when I saw them at Truck that they didn't have a drummer. …

  • 30,000 Songs

    6 Mar 2010, 20:04 by katieofromreno

So... I meant to do a year-end journal about my 2009 listening trends. I failed. So, I'm going to do the 30,000 post, and feel satisfied.

Here's my Top 20 tracks, as they stand now.

    Born Losers

    You Are the Best Thing

For the Widows in Paradise, for the Fatherless in Ypsilanti

    Skinny Love

    Happy Ending

    Great DJ

    Head Over Feet

    If You Were Here

    La Discoteca

    Daniel

    Sleepyhead

I'm Not Gonna Teach Your Boyfriend How to Dance With You

    Hometown Glory (Radio Edit)

    Falling Slowly

    Hunger Strike

    Get Up And Go

    Fade Into You

    Romulus

    Death of Me

    Naked As We Came

    Why

You may have noticed that there are 21 tracks here. "Why" and "Naked as We Came" tied for the #20 spot, so they both got on here.

There are definitely some changes from 10,000 songs ago, but Matthew Good is still holding strong. I guess I'm most surprised by "Great DJ" being so high on my list, but it's on a lot of my mixes, so it kind of makes sense.

  • Phoenix, Miami Horror @ Brisbane Convention Centre (March 1, 2010)

    1 Mar 2010, 14:49 by BenPreece

    Phoenix, Miami Horror

    Convention Centre: 1.3.10

It’s evident enough alone, from the hordes of young girls with an unnecessary amount of navel showing, that French electro-pop rockers Phoenix have crossed over from the musician’s band of indie heroes to that hip-as-fuck pop band that Nova are probably flogging to pieces.

But first we must endure Miami Horror who provide nothing more than bland electro-pop with a four to the floor dance beat and a bunch of unmemorable melodies. ‘Don’t Be With Her’ sounds like they’ve been listening to far too many Prince records, namely ‘When Doves Cry’ while ‘Sometimes’ closes the set and is the most memorable thing by far.

The opening guitar-plunks of ‘Liztomania’ are soon heard from the darkness and deafening screams fill the room as the almost-tribal drums get virtually everyone bouncing. The six band members are instantly professional, delivering note for note, beat for beat, synth-stab for synth-stab with meticulous precision and ultimate gusto from each and every member. …

    Phoenix

RIDING THE SUCCESS WAVE WITH THEIR FOURTH ALBUM WOLFGANG AMADEUS PHOENIX, FRENCH ELECTRO-ROCKERS PHOENIX ARE HEADING BACK TO AUSTRALIA FOR THE SECOND TIME IN JUST OVER SIX MONTHS. FRONTMAN THOMAS MARS TALKS TO BEN PREECE.

It was August 2009 Phoenix last visited our shores on the back of massively-embraced album Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix. Of course the band has been infiltrating the international music scene now since the release of their debut record United and hit single ‘Too Young’ back in 2000 with every subsequent release attracting more and more attention of both hardcore music lovers and musicians alike. When albums Alphabetical (2004) andIt’s Never Been Like That (2006) dropped Phoenix experienced a rapidly growing crossover audience that ate up singles like ‘Everything Is Everything’, ‘Long Distance Call’ and ‘Consolation Prizes’ by the thousands. From there their profile grew, they became darlings of the biz – a musician’s band…
