Peter Hammill's 12" single for "Painting by Numbers" was issued in 1986 by Foundry Records.

The A-side is "Painting by Numbers (extended version)" which is also known as the extended mix. It has a middle eight that is not present on the album version.

The B-side of the 12" single contains two songs. The first is the standard version of "You Hit Me Where I Live" which was on the CD version of Skin in most countries. The second song is the album version of "Shell."

During later remastering campaigns covering Hammill's back catalogue, the "Painting by Numbers (extended version)" that was on this single has not been included. There was also a "You Hit Me Where I Live (extended version)" but it was not released on any singles or versions of Skin at the time.
