Oh, Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark. It is almost inescapable as a Factory fan to miss this band in your 'required listening' searches. Once I'd heard Joy Division and New Order as a child, the other prominent band on the airwaves here just made sense. That band was Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark.
First song I ever heard of their was Electricity. It was played on one of those late night club broadcasts I oft talk about. Recorded it, replayed it, absorbed it. Started trying to emulate it. You might be surprised that I hadn't heard If You Leave before Electricity. There's a reason for that. I didn't have the means to go see Pretty in Pink when I was that age but the radio was well within my ability. I didn't see the brat pack set of films until they were rebroadcast and 'cleaned up' on television. Eventually, I did connect the two songs to the same band. …
