If I can listen to RATM without being a communist, Dead Kennedys without being an anarchist, As I Lay Dying without being a christian and the whole plethora of black and death metal without being a satanist, then I can listen to Nokturnal Mortum without being a fucking fascist.
After being a fan for many years, 'Verity' is without a doubt my favourite NM album. That main melody in 'Song of the Snowstorm', coupled with the passion in Knjaz Varggoth's vocals, makes my hair stand on end. Amazing stuff.
New album is good and solid, i didn't expect it to be like Voice of steel, since voice of steel was the masterpiece of the band's journey, yet Verity has its own unique solid sound and i think they did a great job in continuing a similar sound to voice of steel yet at the same time present something new and even maybe a step closer to another masterpiece in the future. all in all great work.
I was hoping for them to continue what they started at Voice of Steel, unfortunately only 5th, 6th and 7th song seem to touch that area. Maybe a big grower, but besides those 3 songs seems a weak album.
fuck.... what a return. the new album is phenomenal. im not even gonna compare it to the last album. theyre both totally different. this is my album of the year so far. its going to be very hard to top.
New album is phenomenal. I don't know if it's fair to compare it to anything else, I surely gave my favourite "The Voice of Steel" too little love, but this new one seems to be even better.. I can't get used to some folk elements after first listen, but probably after few next, I will stand proud with this album as my AOTY. Nokturnal Mortum proved again that they're on top of ukrainian black metal and that this scene is beating most popular ones so easily. My God, what an album..
Say what you will, but "Verity" is one of the best albums the whole Pagan Black Metal genre brought to light to this day. Fuck those seven years of waiting, every second was worth it and I've honestly never heard any record like this before. It's perfect in every aspect, they've outdone themselves once again and finally reached the god-level of musicianship only Moonsorrow could get onto until today. All hail Nokturnal Mortum, this is next level stuff and sets the bar even higher than "Voice of Steel" already did.
Verity doesn't have a monumental masterpiece track like Voice of Steel had with White Tower (Night of the Gods comes somewhat close) and I have a hard time getting into Wolfish Berries (it has a majestic intro but just drags on after that) but apart from that I can't say I'm disappointed.
Well, I consider both albums to be outstanding in their own way, while comparing them in an equitable way is a hard thing to achieve because they're very different stylistically. To me, "Iстина" is the ultimate definition of everything that Nokturnal Mortum have done since their founding back then. It gathers the epicness of "Голос Сталi", the lush folk(sy)-arrangements of "Weltanschauung" or even "Lunar Poetry", the symphonic-black-elements of "To The Gates Of Blasphemous Fire" and "Goat Horns" and combines all those ingredients with its primordial atmosphere, the profound/virtuosic instrumentation and an organic production that doesn't lack anything because you can clearly pick out any instrument you want to yet still it has enough depth, heavyness and a wide scope. Though I have to admit that all of this may be daunting to some. It's an album one can definitely see as overloaded thus off-putting at times if you don't get into the world they've intended to create with "Iстина".
I'd still choose "У Човні З Дурнями" because I completely fell in love with those Sympho Black Metal vibes. Either way, I suggest to give "Iстина" the time it demands. I mean, we all shouldn't forget that "Голос Сталi" had 8 full years to grow on everyone (while "Iстина" didn't even have a full year) and that's why we're talking about it like we use to. I was lucky enough that it was love at first spin and I reckon that other's just need more time to explore it, which is totally okay given that they've woven a high richment of details in it.
I had high expectations for Verity, and it didn't disappoint. I like how in some ways it's a synthesis of several of their past styles while still breaking new ground. They've arguably never had this much folk influence on their music before, or at least not this kind of folk influence, and it sounds great. The atmosphere is fantastic as well. It's a logical progression from Golos stali and The Spirit Never Dies while incorporating some of the strongest aspects of their past music, just updated for 2017. Also the album sounds great; it's mixed clearly and generally not mastered loud enough to distort where it's not supposed to. Worth the wait for sure; will almost certainly order the vinyl when it goes up.
Definitely don't regret ordering the vinyl; it's one of the most gorgeous items in my record collection. It's a bit more expensive than a typical 2LP set, but they really went all-out with the packaging and the shipping was free, so I feel like it was worth it. I have company right now, so I probably won't actually have a chance to listen to it for a couple more days, but given that the digital version already sounds good, I'm sure it sounds even better on vinyl.
"Twilightfall" rerelease is just poetry, but I wish there's somewhere released beyond Spotify and vinyl, demo quality is not that good while Spotify version is outstanding. (but I hate Spotify so much)
