Lethal Poor were Phil Winter (bass), Dave Musker (organ and ambient sounds) and Steve North (guitar, vocals and words). The band existed approximately between 1982 and 1985 and was based in London, England. Dave Musker was an ex-member of the legendary Television Personalities and also played with the Jasmine Minks, The Prisoners and even briefly with The Jesus and Mary Chain. Phil Winter is now chief noise-maker with new-folksters Tunng. Steve North was a sound engineer and producer and he produced their only single: 'Trancefloor'. He later played guitar with funk band Desperate Fun, before forming late-80s noise-shockers If It Bleeds… In terms of genre, at the time Lethal Poor would have considered themselves something along the lines of Alternative Funk Punk. The band has always been labelled by others as Goth, something that they didn't necessarily feel described their music. In fact, the Lethal Poor track 'Trancefloor' still turns up in lists of the top 100 all-time Goth tracks. In recent times, the band has been referred to more specifically as Dark Wave or Synth Wave. The band had diverse musical tastes, but they were brought together by a common interest in tight funk, layered with avant-garde noisey stuff. Influences on the band included: A Certain Ratio, Cabaret Voltaire, Medium Medium, Chic, George Clinton, Gang of Four, Billy McKenzie, Scott Walker, The Swans, Sonic Youth and World Domination Enterprises.
