Everybpdy's got a right to their opinion, but SayNo2NWO, let me try to convince you otherwise: like Dylan, who also attracts this criticism from purists, Leonard Cohen's great vocal gift is his incredible phrasing, which is paramount in the way he sings this song but also important in so many other of his songs. His voice is heard at its best on the album Death Of A Ladies' Man, where Phil Spector produced him like a rock and roll star manque. And if you'd ever seen him perform Diamonds In The Mine live where he belts it out like Bruce Springsteen, you might change your mind, too!
Suzanne takes you down to her place near the river, you can hear the boats go by, you can spend the night beside her, and you know that she's half crazy. But that's why you want to be there, and she feeds you tea and oranges that come all the way from China, and just when you mean to tell her that you have no love to give her, then she gets you on her wavelength and she lets the river answer.
