Less than a month after releasing “Patience,” Korean-Canadian R&B artist JUNNY pre-releases “Thank You.” The track is an earnest, unabashed ode to the people who’ve always supported him. JUNNY takes a few moments to give genuine gratitude to everyone around him, proclaiming, “You make me feel alive. Thank you for your love.”
While “Patience” was more of the gritty R&B JUNNY’s known for, “Thank You” opts for subtlety. Instead of growling out his lament to unrequited love, he tempers his voice for greater depth. He tones down the ruggedness that’s infiltrated R&B lately. “Thank You” takes the genre back to the barest rhythm and deepest blues.
What makes this track so appealing is that JUNNY doesn’t attempt to overdo anything. The vocals are some of his purest. He strips away the need to overexaggerate for the sake of attempting to impress. After all, those who already know his music are privy to just how powerful a voice he has in him. Instead, he takes the honest approach. He lets go of the desire to show off. Further, the music is softer, makes use of fewer compositional tricks in lieu of allowing the lyrics and JUNNY’s voice to take center stage.
“Thank You” follows the same narrative of his early 2018 SoundCloud EP “Genuine,” a gift to his fans before his move back to Korea. It’s an earnest look at a young man who owes so much of his notoriety to people who took a chance on him. Whether he believes so or not, the gamble on his potential has definitely paid off. JUNNY continues to learn, to expand his musical vocabulary and thus his ability to express himself. Every facet of his artistry shines on the EP. That same honest-to-goodness emotion is the driving force of “Thank You.”
Both “Patience” and “Thank You” provide a snapshot of what’s in store for fans of the talented vocalist. Perhaps most importantly, they showcase the immense potential JUNNY has and hints at an incredibly bright future.
