Despite the fact that the style (doo wop and barbershop quartet) was a major departure from Cash's normal lead vocal style, the single did quite well achieving #1 on the 1958 U.S. Billboard Hot Country Singles chart. The popularity of the song continues to this day through news of it being the10 billionth download of a popular digital music site and through a recent cover in 2011 by The Folsom Prison Gang.
