The vegan son of a cowboy, John Houx (named for his Wells Fargo-robbing great grandpa) grew up on a cattle ranch on California's redwood coast. He spent his teenage years traveling the American west learning songs and instruments. In 2007 Houx arrived in New York City with only a suitcase and guitar and quickly climbed the ropes of the music scene, and by 2009 has been constantly touring North America and Europe, and self-released his debut full-length, John Houx's Green Period. He is also occasionally seen playing guitar and gu-zheng with his friend Larkin Grimm.
