Jim was born in Orange, New Jersey on June 20, 1961 to a career U.S. Air Force father and a British mother. He lived in Ohio, England, and Florida before his family finally settled in Chattanooga, Tennessee when he was 12 years old. He developed an early love of music listening to his parents' record collection–country/western, easy listening, and swing–and later pop artists like Jim Croce and the Carpenters.
