IDLES continued their track record with another fantastic Punk record that turned the genre on its head. Top 10 AOTY for sure. https://dozensofdonuts.blogspot.com/2018/12/top-50-albums-of-2018-10-1.html
this band is musically quite proficient but the lyrics are fucking dog shit, it's actually embarrassing. compared to other proper (post)punk stuff around right now like Pissed Jeans or Protomartyr, this crap is limp kebab salad
You're not exactly wrong, but it doesn't bother me as much as it does for you. Joe's lyrics are very simple, straightforward, and are often delivered as if he's having a one-way conversation, but I think it fits. I like the music 10x more than I like the lyrics, but the lyrics aren't a detriment to me.
The lyrics aren't exactly great, but I think that's more part of their aesthetic than a lack of imagination, especially because the vocal delivery is quite poetic and tongue-in-cheek. Anyway, Joe has the best delivery of any punk vocalist out their right now IMO, and as you said, instrumentally they're solid, so overall the lyrics don't bother me too much. As for comparing them to Pissed Jeans. "Never Fight a Man with a Perm" is better on every level (yes even lyrically) than "The Bar is Low". I don't know how you want to compare them outside of that though.
Man, now you've made me feel bad because I enjoy both Idles and (old) Metallica lyrics. If this is your low point of cliches, people, I'd suggest turning on the radio and putting things in perspective.
