Most of the complaints I'm seeing in regards to the newer material seem based in an inability to watch a band evolve over time. 'Beyondless' sounds like a natural progression from 'Plowing.' Christ, their penultimate album had a rock-a-billy tune on it. Elias and co. seem to be anti-complacency. The good news is: with the pace he seems to work, I'm sure we'll see some form of new music soon. But Iceage was never going to stay the angsty teenagers they were during New Brigade.
Anyway, looking forward to the shows and to dig into this album more and more.
It's certainly more refined and poppy. That isn't a bad thing. All the "waaaaah this is marching church" sentiments are stupid. Marching Church would never produce a song like Pain Killer, Catch it, or Beyondless. People are just bummin' cuz there isn't that razor punk edge anymore, but boo hoo, bands evolve and change their sound. Some don't want to be locked into one category. I think Beyondless exudes some growth and maturity, I mean shit, after the hopeless bleeding despair of Plowing, a more upbeat rock record is to be expected. I totally dig it and people should open up.
Well the only things people who weren’t able to get the leak have to go on are the singles. I mean ignoring my comment, people are not complaining that they are not punk anymore... they’re complaining because they’re expecting more from them after the success of Plowing and the 4 year wait period isn’t helping that either.
