science and music was the Boulez credo. popular or classical music are certainly important, but in the long run they are always the same bullshit. you need to study new sounds and methods, stay ahead of the times.
Digging his Death Wish film score lately. Recently I've started to realize that Herbie is a unifying thread in a lot of the Jazz and Fusion music I enjoy, so I should probably start spending more time listening to the records he made as a bandleader. I've always liked them but have never really dug into most of them the way I have some of the other great artists. Not sure why that was, because he's pretty much untouchable in the 60s and 70s (and possibly beyond -- haven't really gotten into the 80s much as of yet).
