It's possible to describe Richter and von Karajan as opposites. Richter, among the greatest pianists of all time, can be mannered, but is never superficial. Krajan, on the other hand, can be very pleasing on the surface but ultimately glib and unsatisfying underneath. Still, both were great artists of their time (sixties and seventies), each arguably one of the greats of all time. Richter stopped playing concerti as he grew older, so this is a relatively rare chance to hear him performing with a top-ranked orchestra and a top-ranked conductor.
