I’ve had a Mental Knife since Thursday night and I still haven’t listened to it. First I was sucked into listening to other bands in the genre (at that point specifically DGD and Wolf & Bear) and now I’m working my way chronologically through Hail the Sun’s past releases. Dammit, Hail the Sun is so damn good.
Culture Scars is easily one of the best post-hardcore albums of 2016, but still it frustrates me that even though they haven't lost their experimental influences, the album overall doesn't have that weird vibe that Wake has.
The set that they just played when I saw them on Sunday was incredible and the tracks from Elephantitis went off. Culture Scars was a less predictable progression from Wake but I love every single track on it and they each have something unique and notable to bring to the table.
I really love what these guys are doing, the progression since the first album has been phenomenal. I very much enjoy the EP but I have to say that Wake is my favorite and is somewhat of a masterpiece. Every track on Wake brings something to the table that I enjoy. You could make comparisons to the sounds of other bands but I honestly think that they have their own identity.
