Gazel is a traditional Turkish form of music that centers around vocal improvisation. Sometimes the voice is accompanied by Turkish flute and/or stringed instruments. But the focus is on the voice. The practice of Gazel was discouraged in Turkey in the 20th century, due to its association with nightclubs. It was in danger of dying out. However, there has been a renewed interest in this form of music, leading to a revival in recent years.
