Post Autumn Hymnal is the first record released by Montie Montgomery under the Gulf. name.
Recording for Post Autumn Hymnal started in October of 2017, under which the first three songs of the album were recorded and produced. Recording then resumed on and off between November of 2017 and March of 2018 before coming to a head in May of 2018 where Montgomery finished recording most of the tracks in Oxford, MS.
Post Autumn Hymnal is defined as a loose concept album about "the de-evolution of a party and a relationship". The songs on Post Autumn Hymnal point thematically towards several recurring themes among those are Montgomery's experiences with alcohol, prescription pills, depression, his negative relationship with his Conservative college, and the breaking up of several relationships.
Post Autumn Hymnal heavily incorporates samples in most of its songs from Huey Long, to Israeli Christian liturgical music, to crowds, numbers stations (stated to have been inspired by Wilco), and a harmonium. Montgomery also branched out from piano tracks, utilizing moody synths and ambient pieces.
