if i were to listen to the dead for the first time, which album should i pick?

I like the Dead because it's for people who get how things work. People who follow the Dead on tour have hit the ceiling of what success can be. Everyone else is a cog in the machine and the system.

Touch of Grey & Casey Jones -- Nuts about those two songs.

I've not been especially impressed with the pure jamming shows from the 60ies, eg. the Matrix shows from Oct. 1968 et al. However, the recordings are fine SBD recordings and I THINK they need some professional editing, trimming and splicing such that they form a nice one LP set like the Live/Dead album. Has anybody done such a thing? Any ideas? Could even be a nice official release, would be something different from the archival releases.
