Giovanni Coprario is the Italianized name of English composer, viol player and lutenist John Cooper (around 1575 - 1626). In the early 17th century, Cooper changed his name to Giovanni Coprario, probably after a visit to Italy. Maybe he Italianized his name as Italian music and musicians became more fashionable. Cooper may not be very well known these days, but that was very different in his own time. He was famous, well-respected and worked for King Charles I. Among Cooper’s works are fantasias, suites and other works for viols and violins. ‘Funeral Teares’ is probably his most well-known piece.
