When the new millennium arrived, a Nu Metal wave had been ushered in. It was an age suffocating in a cloud of plagiarism and blatant imitation. Forget about it. Forget the scene, forget the trend, and forget everything the bandwagon has shown you. Exit the mass of uninspired and regurgitated Nu-Metal nonsense that flooded your eardrums. Enter FUELED BY IGNORANCE, and welcome in the new razor's edge. Long before the thoughtless messages of Nu-Metal began tearing up the charts, there was a politically aware and emotionally charged band from Prince George, BC, Canada. That band is known as FUELED BY IGNORANCE, and since January of 1995 they had been honing their skills, and moulding themselves into a brutal assault weapon poised to strike. They were a band driven by an unyielding passion for growth and an insatiable desire to succeed. FUELED BY IGNORANCE clawed their way up the ranks of the underground to sit among it's elite. Today they are no longer, having disbanding in early 2001 due to personal differences. Yet they are still considered by their legions of fans to be one of the most underrated and overlooked unsigned bands in Metal’s history. LOUDSIDE.COM, one of the largest and most respected names for heavy music on the web, honoured FUELED BY IGNORANCE with two nominations in their first annual awards ceremony. This included Unsigned Band of the year, and Underground Album of the Year recognizing the bands first offering "Tears". Other bands nominated in these categories include the then relatively unknown bands PAPA ROACH and HYBRID THEORY (later known as LINKIN PARK). During their height, FUELED BY IGNORANCE toured and shared the stage with a multitude of high profile acts such as I MOTHER EARTH, ZAO, UNSANE, NILE, CRYPTOPSY, THE HAUNTED, ENSLAVED, THE SMALLS, and FACEPULLER. They attracted and acquired the management skills of Phil Arnold from Thrill Entertainment whose roster also included long time scene heavyweights TESTAMENT. Also on board was Debbie Abono of Abono Management who's past credits include such metal luminaries as OBITUARY, SKINLAB, EXODUS, POSSESSED, VIO-LENCE, FORBIDDEN, and CYNIC. An enormous underground buzz surrounded FUELED BY IGNORANCE, evidenced by three of their songs reaching 1 on the Metal Chart in 1999, where they sat neck in neck with BURN THE PRIEST (later to become the force known as LAMB OF GOD) as the most popular Metal band on the site. FUELED BY IGNORANCE even charted as high as 13 overall, which out of a possible five hundred thousand songs, and being one of the biggest music providers on the Internet, was no small achievement. The band was an underground gem, where their voice blasted through with an unrivalled fervor. Their music provides a cathartic tour-de-force of feeling and emotion. Within a single heartbeat elegant melodic guitar segments will collide with a violent apocalypse of percussion. Unbridled sub-harmonic bass rumblings flow into graceful vocal euphonies. FUELED BY IGNORANCE is a raging storm of hostility at one moment, and an ethereal calm the next. When challenged about their purpose, FUELED BY IGNORANCE responds by stating, "It is an assertive modern society by which we are angered over the ignorance we see around us. We need our music to reflect that." This fueled their fire to make a statement. FUELED BY IGNORANCE defied classification, but acknowledged such diverse influences as ENTOMBED, TOOL, MORBID ANGEL, MACHINE HEAD, NAPALM DEATH, DEFTONES, EYEHATEGOD, LIFE OF AGONY, EMPEROR, and SEPULTURA. This was a band engrossed in originality and progression. They had an explosive live show backed by masterful musicianship and song writing strength that attracted a curiosity factor of cult like underground grandeur. Their perseverance had garnered a swath of devoted fans from all over the globe, through touring and word of mouth. FUELED BY IGNORANCE was a hard hitting, angst ridden, war machine empowered by a social conscience. Singer/Lyricist, Simon Springer, comments, "This band is FUELED BY IGNORANCE, not fueled with ignorance. We ride the establishment's ass on the abuse of aboriginal culture, youth lifestyles, and the complacency of middle class ethnocentrism. We don't like what we see and our music points the big finger. These are concerns people should face in life." Adds Guitarist, Adrian Castley, "We recognize issues like childhood bullies, sexism, incest, suicide, racism, spousal abuse, oppression, and youth drug and alcohol abuse…This is a side of humankind's waste that few are willing to address". Fueled By Ignorance Drummer, Shawn Gairdner, and Bassist Jay Christopherson add their comments, "Our goal is to create an imprint that people can relate to, and give them the assurance that others understand their pain." At the dawn of this new millennium we live in a world overrun by crime, stricken by environmental holocaust, and oppressed by an economic dictatorship. Yet in this dire age humankind as a whole is too absorbed in its own apathy to take a stand. FUELED BY IGNORANCE lit a fire under those who listened. Fueling their followers with the desire to take that stand, and make that difference. It is an age of uncertainty. It is an age of detachment. FUELED BY IGNORANCE offered a message of hope, a message of extreme urgency.
