Fri 14 Feb – Ladies In Blues
Great event put on by The Gold Coast Jazz & Blues Club and starring the inimitable Lil' Fi on vocals and (occasional) ukelele, Fiona Boyes on vocals and guitars, Ali Penney on vocals and keyboards and Martha Baartz on sax. A couple of the original ladies were not able to make it so we had male substitutes on bass and drums and both were very good.

As is to be expected, there was a wide variety of music from the ladies and I particularly liked Fiona Boyes, who I have not seen live before. She played a variety of guitars including a cigarbox guitar on which she played slide - good stuff.

Now to start the process of booking them all again for next year!

I'm streaming radio this morning, visiting some old roots music friends. This week is FUNdrive week at community radio,KRFC-FM in Fort Collins, Colorado. We started out 5-1/2 years ago to bring a diverse mix of roots music and public affairs programming from a local perspective. As a volunteer effort (the manager was the only paid staff to start), the programming ebbs and flows over time. Here's a snapshot of where they're at today:

  • Sunday at Byron Bay's 19th Annual Bluesfest

So we were helping the Red Cross at the Bluesfest on Sunday, mainly just to get free entry to see some bands. A few hours of tin-rattling, and we got to enjoy the rest of the afternoon and evening wandering around enjoying the atmosphere.

A few notable acts that we managed to catch :

Managed to catch the last 5 minutes of Guy Davis, who was freaking awesome on the Jambalaya Stage, and a freaking awesome man. I wish we had've been able to knock off earlier so I could have caught more.

We stayed in the main tent (Mojo) for a while to catch the start of The Beautiful Girls. I've not heard much of them before, and can't say I was that impressed.

Again, only managed to catch the last 5 minutes of Martinez (who don't seem to be listed on, but they sounded awesome. The track we heard was really Latin inspired, and almost verging upon .

I managed to catch most of Boyes, Grill and DelGrosso - made up of Fiona Boyes, Mookie Brill and Rich DelGrosso. …
