There are some friendships that, at some point in history, may seem unlikely. And in another, necessary. So it was with Elis and Rita Lee. Rita is the one who counts. “We had crossed paths several times during Record's festivals and she hated Mutantes. That rock'n'roll thing, guitar”. And for Rita, it was clear that “she didn't want to be friends”.
But in 1976, Rita Lee was arrested on charges of possession of marijuana. That's when the surprise happened. “The first and only person who visited me in jail: Elis. Threatening to call the press. It was planted there and it was not satisfied until it saw me. I never expected this.” When Rita was released, a great friendship began. "She knows that I left without any money and asked me for songs." Her first: “Doce de Pimenta”. Who plays with the nickname "Pimentinha" that Elis had won from Vinícius de Moraes. “I thought about you a lot when I was stuck, we feel super-lonely. And I thought: “if this is a pepper, it's a very sweet pepper!”, says Rita to Elis in the special where the song was shown, on TV Bandeirantes in 1979.
