The Singles 81–85 is a compilation of Duran Duran's UK singles released during the years 1981-1985. This covers the period from their debut album Duran Duran (1981) up to and including the non-album single "A View to a Kill" (1985). The first edition was issued by EMI on 12 May 2003 as a "box set" of thirteen CDs in replica sleeves of the original singles. When the collection was reissued in 2009, the material was split across a three CD set instead of separating each single to its own CD.
Each CD in the original box set attempted to compile the vinyl singles as they were released in the early 1980s, including any b-sides or alternate tracks from the different 12" and 7" versions. At the time, many of these tracks had not yet appeared on CD.
Since this collection is based on the regular UK single releases, songs and mixes that only appeared on international releases were excluded from the discs. Additionally, one track that was issued in the UK—"Rio (single version)" from the initial version of the UK 7-inch "Rio" single (EMI5346)—was replaced by "Rio (Part 1)."
