Dimitri Minakakis was born in Northern New Jersey on June 16, 1977 and grew up in Morristown (NJ). Dimitri is a founding member and the first vocalist/frontman of The Dillinger Escape Plan.
with Dillinger Escape Plan (1997-2001)
Dillinger recorded their first EP (self-titled) in 1997 and embarked on a short North American tour after its release. The lineup during this time consited of Dimitri (vocals), Ben Weinman (guitar), Adam Doll (bass) and Chris Pennie (drums). After the tour, Dillinger hired a new guitarist, John Fulton, and recorded the influential Under The Running Board EP, which recieved much aclaim from critics, and also managed to get the support of other bands at the time like Meshuggah, due to its ground-breaking experimentilism and complex fusion between hardcore punk and jazz. After Under The Running Board was released, John Fulton left the band, and shortly afer this, Adam Doll was involved in a car accident, paralyzing him from the chest down. The band continued on, constantly writing for what would be their first album, Calculating Infinity. For live shows, a new guitarist, Brian Benoit, was hired. With his injuries, Doll could not play bass on the album, so Weinman had to play both guitar and bass. Dimitri began writing lyrics for the album, and soon, recording of the album had started. Dimitri's lyrics seem to have a constant theme of betrayal and failed relationships, and apparently, his bandmates used to hold up photographs of ex-girlfriends to make him scream harder. After Calculating Infinity was finally recorded and released, Dillinger went on tour with Mr. Bungle with new a bass player, Jeff Wood. During this time, Dillinger's live shows became even more intense, incorparating fireworks, light shows, and fire-breathing. Later that same year, Dimitri parted ways with Dillinger, crediting his departure to the rigorous touring schedule. He still remains in close contact with both current and former Dillinger Escape Plan members Ben Weinman, Brian Benoit and his replacement Greg Puciato,
Post Dillinger Escape Plan (2001-present)
After Dillinger, Dimitri began to concentrate on art and graphic design more and set up his own business, Pronto Workshop, designing things like album artwork for bands like Poison The Well and Dillinger's 2004 album Miss Machine. In 2003, Dimitri founded and performed a year long stint with (now defunct) band Tokyowith fotmer members of Knives Out, releasing one EP before finally disbanding. Accordind to former Frodus drummer Jason Hamacher, he formed his "dream metal band" with Dimitri on vocals, Mike Schleibaum and Kurt Ballou on guitar and Nate Newton on bass, but nothing seems to have come of it yet. Dimitri appeared on Dillinger's 2007 album Ire Works, doing guest vocals on first song, "Fix Your Face".
He is currently married and living in Northern New Jersey, focusing his time on art, design and photogarphy.
