Exciter is definitely very underrated. This was maybe the last time Depeche Mode truly surprised us. That's not to say that any of their album sounds after this are bad, just that they sound more like the rest of their albums. Exciter is truly one of a kind in their discography. R.I.P. Mark Bell.
Seems to me you have two options here: to love it tirelessly or hate it to dead.
I love it, and I'm really trying hard to find out why most of DM fans are so against this ... but then I remember Sounds of the Universe, which I can't stand. These two albums have this "love it or hate" in common I dare to say.
I think there are things I love about each track on this album, but there's also always something in there that bothers me to no end. I suppose I agree with Pitchfork's negative review, it's frustrating to listen to because there's so much potential but something about it just comes across as kinda flat.
I like some songs by them, you know the most known tracks. But none of them can compete with songs like "Breathe", Shine", "Freelove" etc. "Exciter" is an amazing record to me. I wouldn't call myself a fan in general, but i'm for sure a fan of this record.
