ah yes, black metal needs a melody. As someone who loves merlo does, this song slaps.

"Dafuq are you doing listening to Darkthrone in the first place?" is definitely gatekeepy. Whatever, thanks. I am already the most humble man in the universe so I don't need to practise any more humility.

Especially in the late 90s/early 00s - Third Wave BM? - the number of DT clones and Norsecore bands was astronomical. All trying to play as fast as they could and be the most tr00 and kvlt. Many of which either disappeared or were forced to adapt their sound to something a bit more memorable.

More or less, this was the reaction from self-proclaimed "underground" to genre's "commercialisation", as they used to call it. Disastrous times, indeed. Crimson Evenfall changing their name and turning into an another faceless cliché black metal band, Northern Heritage 'zine promoting DT clones and writing ridiculous articles against Tolkien-related imagery in BM, awful and talentless bands from Central and Eastern Europe being worshipped in the scene, the overall resentment towards Nordic BM... Only some bands in the Swedish scene were smwht successful in keeping it underground (and actually dangerous) and at the same time artistically essential - Funeral Mist comes to mind first. Even Armagedda, who started out as a Darkthrone-clone, have eventually managed to develop their very own identity. A cancerous time, and sadly, those years were actually defining in terms of shaping the genre's aesthetical approach and overall ethics - this is why I'm not terribly interested in modern BM.

What more needs to be said? This is a perfect black metal song. Simple, evil, raw, cold, and atmospheric. Perfect tone, production, everything. To those who want to get a good black metal introduction: Look no further.
