"ARCHE" is the 9th Studio album released by Japanese metal band DIR EN GREY. The album was released on December 10th, 2014, and was followed by "The Insulated World" on September 26th, 2018. ARCHE's central theme is "pain," as it was shown in a trailer released on November 12th, 2014 promoting the album. The word Arche is Greek for "the origin," chosen by the band as to represent their mixing of their older sounds with sounds familiarized by their 7th and 8th studio albums, "UROBOROS" and "DUM SPIRO SPERO", respectively and its mean to encompass every phase the band has evolved through.
The album stood at #4 on Billboard's Top World Albums, #3 on Billboard's Japan Top Albums, and #4 on the Oricon weekly chart. The success of the album was also measured by rave reviews from many fans and metal websites, including the album receiving a 4/5 Stars on Bloody Disgusting and 8/10 on Ultimate Guitar.
Guitarist Die had stated before the release that the album would "be the most achieved sound that they ever had." Vocalist 京 had said via the band's website that "This album is being worked on with me thinking about the past and future of myself as a vocalist, more than I have had ever before. That place where the old me and the new me crosses is what is being put into the 9th album “ARCHE”’.
The album is composed of 16 new tracks, which include pre-released singles "輪郭" (Rinkaku) and "Sustain the untruth". The band's music style change is strongly evident throughout the album, especially in the tracks "Phenomenon" and "鱗" (Uroko). There were three different editions of the album: Standard (CD), Limited (2CD), and Special Limited Edition (2CD+BD and 2CD+DVD).
The Limited Edition CD 2 includes two additional tracks ("and Zero" and "てふてふ" (Tefu tefu)), plus an acoustic version of "Behind a vacant image" and 咀嚼 (Soshaku). It also includes two remixes: "Sustain the untruth " and "Unraveling ", plus the crossover version of "鱗" (Uroko).
The album's third disc (Blu-Ray/DVD) includes two Shot in One take videos of "Chain repulsion" and "Un deux", live footage from Tour14 Psychonnect -Mode of ”Gauze”? at Shinkiba Studio Coast (08/30/2014) (Songs: "かすみ" (Karasu), "蜜と唾" (Tsumi to Batsu), and "激しさと、この胸の中で絡み付いた灼熱の闇" (Hageshisa to, kono mune no naka de karamitsuita shakunetsu no yami); it also includes a 'Behind the Scenes of Arche' documentary.
