City Saints might be a new band, but the members are no rookies. For nearly twenty years drummer Magnus Jonsson has been a driving force in street punk veterans Perkele, whose significance in mainland Europe is undeniable. Teaming up with Stefan Johansson, drummer of Chillihounds, the two began discussing a parallel high energy punk rock outfit some fifteen years ago.
At last, in the year of 2012, with ten albums, numerous EP:s, singles and tours between them, the two men finally found time to work together. The group was soon joined by remaining members of Chillihounds; bass guitarist Carl Linnaeus and guitar player Gabriel Aadland added an important part to City Saints tight but loose vibe. Having nurtured a lifelong influence in the attack of Motörheads forceful rock’n’roll, Cock Sparrers brilliant melodies, Johnny Thunders and the Heartbreakers stripped down rawness, Ramones revved up energy and Sex Pistols stiff upper lip, the musical direction of City Saints is not difficult to pinpoint.
What started as a drunken dream has now materialized into a furious punk rock machine that blends punk and early rock’n’roll.
City Saints is one of the most exciting bands that has emerged from the punk scene in Gothenburg. The city’s working class mentality is summed up in the group’s slogan: “Kicking ass for the working class.”
