The first time I ever liked Chopin was the first time I heard Charlie play at the Olympia church of Nancy Adsit, his long time teacher. This was the summer before he left for Harvard. Many times I heard Chopin played in such a sugary, romantic way that I couldn't stand it! The first Chopin piece Charlie played was like nothing I had ever heard before, something like Chopin played like Beethoven! At intermission of another concert in Centralia, his home town, I started talking to a neighbor who knew a lot about music, so I asked him if he was a pianist. He said, "Not any more, I'm not!" I think that all the hype and raves from the New York Times, etc, are terribly understated. Charlie Albright reminds me of Van Cliburn.
