It was written by Richard Carpenter and John Bettis originally for their previous band Spectrum, composed by Karen and Richard, lyricist and guitarist John Bettis, guitarist Gary Sims, bassist Dan Woodhams, and vocalist Leslie "Toots Johnston". According to Richard, "Maybe It’s You" is a song the Carpenters sibilings always liked so they decided to include it on Close to You. The oboe solo was played by Doug Strawn, a longtime member of the Carpenters tour band.
