Mzee Kiki or Bwana Kiki started with Ibrahim Mtumwa and David Marame a music workshop called the Watafiti (Researchers in Kiswahili) in 1986. This first 'fusion' group in Tanzania assisted by the Embassy of the Netherlands, composed some eight songs using traditional ethnic music from various parts of the country and transforming it in pop- and jazz-inspired contemporary style. The group recorded six songs in Tanga in a home studio in 1987. Most of the songs recorded in Tanga were later recorded in Harara (Zimbabwe) resulting in the album called Umoja (Unity). The growing interest in the music of Watafiti was the craddle for TatuNane the next project of the Watafiti. Four members of the Watafiti joined TatuNane. Mzee Kiki's solo record "Babu Bibi" is recorded in Blantyre (Malawi) in 2001 http://wenyewe.com/MP3/BabuBibi.mp3
