For years Dylan fans regarded 1970's Self Portrait as something akin career suicide, Metal Machine Music with steel guitar and Nashville strings. Another Self Portrait with almost an extra album's worth of lovingly realised covers of old folk and country songs, including this ravishing version of an 18th-century English folk ballad was therefore a revelatory reminder of what Dylan had originally envisioned as a celebration of American music, American song, the republic itself at a time of violent division
