Joel first wrote this song to a soft ballad mystery tune he had in his head. When he performed it for his band in the studio, they informed him WHERE he got the tune - it was identical to Neil Sadaka's "Laughter In The Rain." Embarrassed, Joel changed it to a more rocking tune.
This is the opening song to "The Stranger" ; it is not on "Piano Man" as credited. Both are great albums, but "the Stranger" is a little stronger in it's entirety - despite the wonderful "Captain Jack" and "Ballad of Billy the Kid" on Piano Man. Billy - you're still breathing, so get to work cranking out a few more gems ;)-
The whole song is pure awesomeness but my favourite part is 02:28-ending, the part without lyrics. I dont know why but i started to cry while listening that, so many pleasant memories were recalled, and i have heard this song only a month ago. The power of art
