Genius of Das EFX

Four times in my pre-Internet life was I inspired to decipher and hand transcribe hip hop songs. Song one of four (collect 'em all!) was Das EFX's "Mic Checka", a song out of the camp of the rulers of hip hop circa 1992, the Hit Squad.

Riggidy-raow, giggidy gadzooks, here I go. Along with "They Want EFX", "Mic Checka" put Das EFX's rapid-fire, free association, cultural reference, iggity iggity style on full display. The stuff packed into this song is truly amazing.

For example, you've got popular catch phrases -- "geronimo", "burn rubber", "hock-too spit" -- plus references to The Human Torch, Wonder Twins, The Flintstones, Gladys Knight, Little Orphan Annie, the Copacabana, and banana splits, all linked together with hip hop slang. My charts won't update. My friends' charts aren't updating. It's like I've suddenly crossed over into a twilight zone where music doesn't work.

How the hell am I supposed to know what I'm listening to if it doesn't show up here?

Now I'm tempted to crank up a marathon Barry Manilow session. Somehow I know if I did that, it'd pop right up there for the world to see. Then it'd probably stop again for a week, leaving him right there at the top of my list long enough that everyone would know I'd been listening to Copacabana on repeat.

Not that there's anything wrong with that.

Another edition of "songs I recently discovered and added to my list."

just dance - Otherwise known as "the song in Napoleon Dynamite where he dances." This song is actually really infectious, and makes me dance all over the place.

Santa Fe - I've been looking for a copy of this song for a long time. It's got such a beautiful melody.

Carrying The Banner - And THIS one is just so much fun. I love when groups sing two different melodies that connect and intertwine among each other. It's marvelous.

Lonesome Polecat - Another one I've been searching for for ages. This song so perfectly captures the melancholy wanting someone else. I adore it.

Touch Me In The Morning - A really satisfying song, and I actually like Tamyra's better than the original.

Open Arms - Finally tracked down the original of this song. YES! I do love it. I think it's sappy, yes, but there's something about the instrumentation that gets to me.
