The clean vocals sound more and more opera-ish, and at times like Japanese visual kei, which I don't dislike actually. It suits the current music style better, which is rolling away from the more Opeth influenced first records.
New album is definitely a top favorite for the year so far. I felt like they went too much into the doom territory with the last one, but this one is incredible. Great mix of the harsh/clean vocals, and also reminds me a lot of old school Opeth like the earlier albums did.
The new album is amazing, i didnt think they had any new songs but was blown away by the new vocalist, his growls sound like a prime Akerfeldt and his cleans are amazing, he also has an excellent range reminds me of reverend bizarre, i like Mikko but i think this guys vocals are a better fit, the chills i felt listening to On Lonely Towers for the first time, incredible.
Expectations really color your opinion on things. When I first heard this band they did nothing for me. I saw them noted as being similar to some death/doom bands, and that's how I learned about them, and it's with that perspective I went into it. Coming back to them a few months later I really liked what I heard and I would say I'm a pretty big fan. Really good prog-tinged death that actually sounds a bit like if members of weird old prog bands took a stab at death metal. Really quirky at times and super fun! I imagine if Opeth went into their proggyprog direction without scrapping the death metuhls, this is what they could eventually turn into. Well, if they were happier people.
"Barren Earth is excited to welcome Faroese native Jón Aldará ([artist]Hamferð[/artist]) as the band's new lead vocalist. The band has been busy fine-tuning and demoing songs for it's third full-length album which it plans to start recording during spring 2014."

At first I though "this sounds a bit like Swallow the Sun", but then it shifted to be more like Opeth. Then some riffs reminded me of Amorphis. Then Opeth again. And then the flute appeared (crazy thought: "oh god, this sounds like Jethro Tull!"). Then StS once again. These were my impressions when I listened to Curse of the Red River for the first time. It was like ten minutes ago. Man, they're awesome.
