Visual artist, director and photographer Artur Żmijewski presents an audiovisual project entitled Singing Lesson 2, created in 2003, as part of the fourth Bach Académie Bruges organised by the Bruges Concertgebouw. This is a piece of work that asks questions about how we perceive otherness, how we view the Other in the Levinasian sense of the word, by giving him a free hand. What interests Żmijewski is the fact that neither suffering, nor physical problems nor social norms can destroy a person’s joie de vivre. Negating the implicit rules governing the rapport between singing and the audience is concomitant with the rejection of the social roles assigned to the singers.
