I think this is a fantastic album, right up there with Facelift and Dirt. I understand people's issues with the mixing, the guitars are a bit too loud and the drums sound flat, but hey, that's music in the 21st century, unfortunately.
The mix is too loud. That's the main problem, which then results in other issues: instruments are distorted, clipping, the album is hard to listen to in one sitting, yadda yadda. I'm not the first one to point it out, though. Black Gives Way to Blue is notorious for these issues.
I think this album would have more people into it if the band wasn't called Alice in Chains anymore It would've probably been an all around much better album because the singer wouldn't feel like he has to ape Layne and the band could have been creative without pandering to expectations from a fanbase that wants more of the same over and over. As it is, it's a thoroughly predictable regurgitation of past glory days.
Very mixed feelings about this. It's not a bad album, but it feels sort of bland. I think I would have liked it if they'd reformed under any other name than Alice In Chains. Can't really forgive them for that.
unpopular (or not?) opinion: i think this album would have more people into it if the band wasn't called alice in chains anymore, most people think of layne when they think of alice in chains and of course this isn't layne.. therefore it turns them off
I love this album. It needs more Will's participation to be perfect, but overall is a really great record. AIC sound, great writing, great playing, and the mastering isn't that bad, at least it doesn't kill the general atmosphere of the album. In conclusion, the best comeback album since Back in Black.
