Ainu Rebels was a musical and dance group that mixed traditional music/dance/fashion of the native Ainu people of northern Japan with hip-hop elements. The group was begun in summer 2006, and has had as many as 15 members. It was led by Mina Sakai (酒井美直), who is of Ainu ancestry and who formed the group to reclaim pride in her heritage and give others like her the courage to do the same. The group mainly focused on live music and dance performances, but released one single, "e=katuhu pirka" ("You're Beautiful"), in January 2010, which features lyrics in the Ainu language and showcases traditional instruments such as the mukkuri (jaw harp). The group has been on hiatus since June 2010.
Mina has continued a career in music with her vocal contributions to the Final Fantasy XIII soundtrack and most recently in the band IMERUAT, which means "lightning" in the Ainu language.
