”Excursions” is a song that sets the theme for the rest of the record, and arguably the group’s career. Within the song’s first few lines, Q-Tip recalls words from his father who likened the improvisational nature of jazz’s bebop to hip-hop’s freedom-filled sonic structure. The song sets the central thesis for the album of Afrocentric content delivered with witty lyricism over minimalist jazz grooves.

Jazz sample from Art Blakey & The Jazz Messengers’ ‘A Chant For Bu’ recorded in the 1970s with the great Woody Shaw on trumpet.
