1996. Los Angeles. In an apartment covered by the dust of the burnt out, so called lo-fi movement, 25m Floater was formed. The first recordings were inexcuseably dubbed over some Pixies songs via a 4-track onto a ragged, old BASF cassette.
A year later. Kobe, Japan. The band starts playing live. The first shows being so unpolished and lacking considerable technique that they became somewhat tragicomedy-esque performances. A few more cassettes (this time Maxell) are released and though consisting mostly of noise, a few of these tracks still remain favorites.
Time and band members move on. 25m’s sound and seriousness as a band solidify. After debuting 2 EP’s, My lovely day lo-fi hater (99) and Pinkeye (00), their first full length album, Unamerican 3rd Floor Genius Wannabe (01), is released on the band’s own label, Chewy Rock. Reviews were scarce but the response was consistently positive. Even Norman Blake (Teenage Fanclub) gave the Pinkeye EP a thumbs up in his Cookie Scene interview.
More lineup changes and during the transition a compilation of early work etc., Previously Unleashed Shites 96-02, is released on Kichijo’s (drums) Shining April label.
The long awaited 2nd full length release, Too Sweet for Rock and Roll, came at great expense. The effort, time, and money put into it drained all members and put them at each other’s throats at times. But there were rewards – a dream come true: touring Japan with one of their biggest inspirations, Silkworm and a showcase spot at the CMJ 2004 Music Festival in NYC.
25m was already dazzling fans with new songs and laying down tracks in the studio for their next release by mid-2005, when Kichijo (drums) announced he was leaving the band. After much soul-searching and a few shows with Kakusei (guitar/drums) back on drums the band decides it’s time to move on to new projects.
25m Floater’s adventures end at Kim’s (bass) recently opened venue, Helluva Lounge on December 30, 2005 but their fans and the Kansai indie-scene will never forget them!
