This is a set of primitive performances I recorded on the piano a couple of years ago. They should be considered demos; I edited out some fumbling from "Terra", which I wasn't completely finished learning when I recorded it, but plenty of mistakes have been left in, and the last two tracks aren't even proper compositions (although I did incorporate Pachelbel's Kanon in D towards the end of the latter).

The first song is a medley of an excerpt from Genesis' "Supper's Ready" (specifically, the flute solo before "Apocalypse in 9/8") and an original composition I wrote over fifteen years ago, imaginatively named "Love". I never actually wrote a melody that was satisfactory enough to become permanent and never came up with words that I felt did the topic justice. Honestly, it only really works for me if I play it differently every time. I improvised a bit on the "Supper's Ready" theme as well. "Love" begins at the 3:34 mark.

"Terra" is a recording of two different songs by Final Fantasy composer Nobuo Uematsu (植松伸夫), and is the only piece in this collection to be subjected to heavy editing. (I had several false starts, and you wouldn't want to listen to them). Both of them can be reasonably translated into English as "Terra", but have different names in Japanese. "ティナのテーマ" is literally translated as "Tina's Theme", but thanks to translator Ted Woolsey the character whose name it bears is best known in the West as Terra, and the track may thus also sometimes be known as "Terra's Theme". (The localisation change was likely because Tina is an exotic name in Japan, but is extremely common in the West, while Terra is somewhat more exotic and contrasts nicely with the other main female character, Celes.) The second track, "テラ", literally does translate as "Terra". The first song is from Final Fantasy VI and the second is from Final Fantasy IX. The Final Fantasy IX "Terra" begins at 8:04 into the track.

Not much to say about the improvisations. I honestly mostly made them because I wanted to test out the audio recorders I was using, but hadn't practised anything else to the point where I considered it worth recording. The first one is named in honour of a sentence devised by linguist Noam Chomsky to demonstrate that a sentence can be grammatical without actually making sense. The second one was a partially successful experiment in attempting to learn jazz scales and, as mentioned, features an excerpt of Johann Pachelbel's Canon in D major (I also transposed the major chords to minor and vice versa at one point for variety's sake). I actually stopped playing about halfway through the recording and then decided I wasn't finished; the recording picks up again at around 11:18 into the track. (I've excised about forty seconds that were mostly silence for the sake of pacing, but that's the only edit I've made to either of the improvs apart from fading them in and out and adjusting the volume levels.) My performance of the Kanon is inspired by George Winston's arrangement on his album December, though I didn't perform a note-for-note rendition because I never actually learned how to play his arrangement and was largely reproducing it from ear. A close listener will be able to hear my dog bark near the end of the piece, which is why I stopped playing shortly thereafter. I probably could've gone on for half an hour or longer if I hadn't been interrupted.

The cover artwork is a contemporary illustration of the Haymarket riot on 1886 May 15 from Harper's Weekly. Because it is over a hundred years old, it is in the public domain.
