That is a great thing considering the age of the band, pushing 30 years. There are very few things as consistent as Slayer have been for that long.
Starting out in 1983 with the release of Show No Mercy, they started out as the fastest and heaviest of the Big 4. The entire album was a sonic assault. Of course with guys like Dave Lombardo playing drums, you have no choice other than to be fast and heavy.
In 1985 Hell Awaits came out. The songs were a little longer on this release, and had a slight progressive feel. The first time I heard the song Hell Awaits was on a sampler tape called Rising Metal. Of course I really liked the intro to the song. The rest of it I did not really care for. Of course at that time I was mostly listening to Iron Maiden and Ozzy Osbourne. Shrapnel opened up the night with a decent thrash assault. They were very influenced by bay area legends such as Testament and Exodus themselves, and provided good entertainment for an Exodus crowd. The sound was good quality and the performance was tight. 6/10
The next band to take the stage were Man Must Die. They had a mix of grinding thrash metal and deathcore, which wasn't awful, but wasn't particularly good either. They did not generate as much of a crowd reaction as they had thought, with the large pitting space being left as simply a space for most of the set. However, towards the end, the Scots paid a tribute to their upbringing on thrash metal by performing a vicious rendition of Slayer's classic anthem Postmortem, which did a very good job in getting the crowd hyped up, with a lot more interest and enthusiasm being shown by the fans. Overall, an average set compared to what was to come. 4/10

Needed to take a break from (finally) cleaning up the property after last weekend's storm, so I headed up to an area bookstore to look for a DVD I need for class, and happened across local author and Cleveland Scene Music Dude D.X. Ferris, who was there for a book signing: yet another book in the (recommended) 33 1/3 Series, this one being the story behind Reign In Blood!
Had a chance to talk with him and K-ROCK jock Matt Wardlaw for about an hour, which was well spent. Class guys.
One of the first questions I asked Ferris was whether he had had the chance to get Tori Amos's take on Slayer as he was researching material for the book, and among the interviews he did while writing this, she indeed was one of them. I asked him why she decided to do her own, strange cover of Raining Blood (previous SotD - Slayer's, not Tori's). He didn't tell me directly, not wanting to spoil the story in the book I suppose.

I LIKED: Celtic Frost . THEY CAME OUT ON STAGE AT 20.15 AND FOR 90 MIN. THEY ASTONISHED US WITH THEIR ENDLESS DARK SONGS. DRESSED IN BLACK-CORPSPAINTED-TOTAL MYSTAGOGIA!!!!!
