Biografia

Martin Messier is a composer, a performer and a video artist. Hiscuriosity for graphic arts has brought him to explore the relationship between sound and image. It's this same interest that inspires him to create audio performance, live electronics, installation, videomusic, music for dance and theatre.

His work has been broadcast in national and international festivals including Mutek (Canada), Mois Multi, Escales Improbables, IMEB (France), Videoholica (Bulgarie), Bang on a Can (NY), NIME (Italie), 404 Festival (Taiwan), Isis Arts (UK), Digital Art Festival (Bulgarie), Cartes Flux Festival (Finland), Transmediale (Berlin) et Sonar (Barcelone, Chicago).

Based on strong aptitudes for rhythm, Martin's esthetic can be defined as a complex, left field and happily strange sound amalgam, constantly playing with construction and deconstruction.

Holding a diploma in drums for jazz interpretation, Martin Messier has completed a bachelor’s degree in electroacoustic composition at the Université de Montréal, and De Montfort University (England, UK). His curiosity for graphic arts has brought him to explore the relationship between sound and image, in which he discovered videomusic and digital motion graphics. It’s this same interest that inspires him to compose music for dance and theatre, the main part of his composition work in the last years. Recently, Messier has founded a solo project through which he develops live electroacoustic performance borrowing stylistic elements from IDM (Intelligent Dance Music), acousmatic and folk. Based on strong aptitudes for rhythm, Messier’s aesthetic can be defined as a complex, left field and happily strange sound amalgam, constantly playing with construction and deconstruction.

Notes from No Type label:

"'Et si l'aurore disait oui…' is young Montreal composer Martin Messier on guitar (one note at a time), melodica (one black note at a time), voice (one syllable at a time), bass (one string at a time), glockenspiel (one hand at a time), piano (one finger at a time), and computers (audio and video at the same time). And when it's all mixed up together, you get a complex and leftfield sound amalgam that is happily strange and sweetly idiosyncratic, while borrowing from certain (good) ideas of IDM, acousmatics, pop, folk and even prog. Basically, a more than pertinent addition to No Type's catalogue circa 2007. "
