Gli Immortal nacquero a Bergen nel 1989 con il nome di Satanael, poi Old Funeral, fondati da Abbath (Basso e voce), e Demonaz alla (chitarra). In questo seminale periodo troviamo in formazione anche Varg Vikernes, che però uscirà poco dopo per seguire il proprio progetto. Influenzati dagli Slayer, all'inizio la band si dedicò al death metal ma grazie all'incontro con il chitarrista dei Mayhem Euronymous e alla loro passione per Bathory e Venom i due decisero di dedicarsi al black metal.
